Our School's History 

On the 1st of July 1965, Our Lady of the Wayside national school opened its doors for the first time. The school had three classrooms, boys' and girls' cloakrooms, bathrooms and a water tower. The 52 children who were enrolled were greeted by the two teachers, Mr. Frank Kelliher and Mrs. Maura Kelliher, appointed for duty by parish priest and first Manager Canon. O'Shea.

Over the next three years enrolement doubled to 104 pupils and an extension to the new school was immediately warranted. The extension included an office, a kitchen, a long room (two convertible classrooms), and a boiler room for the radiator central heating.

As a result of rapidly growing numbers, the school continues to expand and today, caters for 320+ pupils and 22 staff.
The school got its name from the blue Church which has become a well-known landmark in Kilternan. The feast of Our Lady of the Wayside is celebrated on the 24th of May.
There was a tradition, surviving until about 1980, of an annual blessing of the bicycles and cyclists of South Dublin which was conferred at Our Lady of the Wayside church.
Perhaps this is why the teaching of safe cycling is of such importance in our school!
